ON THE DYING GRASS

DIRECTOR

After a Hollywood agent suffers the loss of her closest friend and biggest client, she is asked to continue representing an AI version of the deceased actor.

After graduating from Vanderbilt University, I found myself in an industry grappling with the rise of artificial intelligence. This experience, shared by my creative partners, sparked a unique perspective on our place in an industry that seems to be shifting towards technology and AI as a replacement for artists and new talent. With the support of ArtLab and the Wondry at Vanderbilt University, we embarked on a journey to create a short film that would follow a character much like ourselves, struggling to find her place in a world where she is asked to represent an AI version of her recently deceased client and friend.

This story needs to be told now more than ever. People are scared and confused about artificial intelligence and the idea of being replaced by it. By collaborating with scientists and artists while making the film, we wanted to address people's concerns and provide them with a fresh perspective on this technology. Having studied computer science and the ethics of social media and artificial intelligence, I am passionate about using film as a way to communicate important ideas about technology in an entertaining and informative way. Looking around the classroom at my peers, I realized that more people need to be thinking ethically about the technology we use in our daily lives, and we are often lost in a sea of battling for attention, no matter the cost. This movie tackles a field of science that is exponentially growing every day, and it is easy to get lost and struggle with one's place in all of it.
